<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But incorporation creates something more than a legal entity. It brings together people, purpose, resources, relationships, capabilities, responsibilities and expectations. Gradually, these separate elements begin to form an organized whole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From Individuals to Organization<\/h4>\n\n\n\n
A legal act can create an entity. But an entity does not automatically become an
organization. An organization begins to emerge when different elements are brought into a meaningful relationship with one another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
People gather around a purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Resources are committed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Activities are undertaken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Capabilities begin to develop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Relationships form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Responsibilities are distributed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Decisions need to be made.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Gradually, what may have begun as a collection of separate elements starts to acquire coherence. Something begins to organize itself.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
The important question, therefore, is not only:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
What comes into existence when an organization is incorporated?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
It is also:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
How do the different elements of its existence become an organized whole?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Elements of an Organization<\/h4>\n\n\n\n
<\/p>\n\n\n\n
An organization is not a single thing. It is a coming together of many different
elements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There are people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There is a purpose that gives their collective action direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There are resources that make action possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There are activities through which intentions are translated into action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Capabilities develop through knowledge, experience and practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Relationships connect people and activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Structures provide a degree of continuity and coordination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Governance helps guide decisions, responsibilities and accountability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
None of these elements, by themselves, is an organization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Organization begins when they become meaningfully connected.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

From Elements to Coherence<\/h4>\n\n\n\n
<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The challenge, therefore, is not simply to acquire the elements required for an organization. It is to bring them into a relationship that enables the whole to function.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A collection of talented individuals does not automatically become a capable organization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A set of resources does not automatically create value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A structure does not automatically create coordination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Rules do not automatically create responsibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The different elements must somehow learn to work together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Purpose must find expression in action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
People must develop relationships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Activities must connect into flows of work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Decisions must find their way through the organization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Resources must be directed towards the creation of value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Coherence is what begins to transform a collection of elements into an organization.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Organization as a living Whole<\/h4>\n\n\n\n
<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Once an organization begins to acquire coherence, something more interesting happens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The relationships between its elements begin to matter as much as the elements themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The organization develops patterns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Work begins to flow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Decisions create consequences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Experiences become learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Learning changes capability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Capability creates new possibilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The organization is no longer simply a legal entity containing people and assets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It begins to develop its own way of functioning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Its own patterns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Its own memory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Its own capabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Its own culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In this sense, incorporation may be an event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But organization is a continuing process.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

What value is it here to create?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
Who and what must come together?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
How will work be organized?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
How will decisions be made?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
How will responsibilities be distributed?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
How will resources be brought into action?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
How will the organization learn, adapt and continue to evolve?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
The answers may differ from one organization to another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But the underlying questions remain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Grammar of Incorporation<\/strong> is an inquiry into these fundamental elements and the relationships that bring them together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It explores how an entity acquires purpose, structure, capability, relationships and the capacity for coordinated action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
